Wool Garden Mulch 5kg - Natural NZ Wool Mulch for Vegetable Gardens, Pots & Raised Beds
Wool Garden Mulch is a 100% natural, New Zealand-made garden mulch made from shredded sheep dags. This 5kg bundle bag covers approximately 5-6 square metres and is designed to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, deter slugs and snails, and slowly release nutrients into your soil, all without chemicals.
What it does
Wool fibres hold up to three times their weight in water, reducing how often you need to water. As the mulch breaks down over 6–12 months, it releases nitrogen and organic matter back into the soil, acting as a slow-release fertiliser. Digging wool mulch directly into your soil also improves soil structure, encourages beneficial microbes, and increases worm numbers, worms being one of the best indicators of a healthy, productive garden. The coarse texture of the fibres also creates a natural barrier that slugs and snails won't cross making it a pet-safe alternative to chemical pest control.
What you can use it on
This mulch works across all garden types: tomatoes, courgettes, silverbeet, lettuce, herbs, strawberries, flowers, fruit trees and shrubs. It suits vegetable gardens, raised beds, garden pots, seedling trays, and flower beds. Safe to use year-round in the New Zealand climate, insulates roots in winter and keeps soil cool in summer.
How to apply
Two ways to use it: spread a 3–5cm layer on top of soil around plants (keeping a small gap around stems), or dig it directly into your garden bed to boost soil health and feed your worm population. Either way, water in after applying to help the fibres settle and begin working. Reapply or top up after 6-8 months.
Frequently asked questions
Does wool mulch keep slugs and snails away? Yes — the coarse wool fibres are uncomfortable for soft-bodied pests to move across, acting as a physical barrier without poison or chemicals.
How long does wool mulch last? Approximately 6–12 months depending on weather conditions, after which it has fully broken down into your soil as organic matter.
Is wool mulch safe for vegetables and edible gardens? Yes — it is 100% natural and chemical-free, making it safe for use around edibles, children, and pets. (Just wash food before eating and hands after gardening)
How much does 5kg cover? Approximately 5–6 square metres at a 3–5cm depth.
Can I dig wool mulch into the soil instead of laying it on top? Yes — digging it in is a great way to improve soil structure, increase organic matter, and encourage worm activity for long-term garden health.
Is this product made in New Zealand? Yes — sourced and made in Aotearoa New Zealand.
